What Kind of Green Apples are Good for Smoothies?
It depends on your preference if you prefer a sweeter taste in your smoothie go for Newtown pippin, pound sweet, or Crispin apple. But if you want a hint of tart in your smoothie, get the granny smith, Rhode Island, or shamrock apple.
Pale green apples are usually sweeter in taste and fresh green color apples are tart. My Personal favorite is Newtown Pippin Apple. It has a smooth peel that is great for smoothies. They are true green in color when freshly picked, but mature to a greenish yellow tone as the apple becomes sweeter in storage.
📋 Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements.
Green Apples: you can use any green apple from Granny Smith, Rhode Island Greening, and Newtown Pippin, to Shamrock, Smeralda, and Crispin depending on how tart or sweet you want your smoothie to be.
Chia Seeds: is an excellent nutrient-rich ingredient and adding them to any smoothie will make it more fulfilling and richer. You can substitute it with poppy seeds or a flax meal. They are completely optional and if your kids don’t like its texture, you can simply skip it or add half in quantity.
Liquid: I am using almond milk as a liquid in this recipe for easy blending and a smooth texture. You can also use coconut water, oat milk, coconut yogurt, pineapple juice, or even water.
🔪 Instructions
To make this delicious green apple smoothie wash and dry the apples. I would suggest leaving the peel on as they are rich in fiber.
Stand the apple on its base and cut it straight down along the core of the apple. Cut from other sides keeping the knife as near the core as possible.
Discard the core and cut the bigger pieces of apple into small about 1-inch chunks. That is a must for easy blending.
Add apple chunks, frozen banana, pineapple chunks (frozen or fresh), and chia seeds to your blender.
Next, add some liquid for easy blending. In this recipe, I am using almond milk.
There is no need for ice if you are using frozen banana and frozen pineapple chunks. But if you want, add a handful of ice cubes to make the smoothie extra thick and fluffy.
Blend until smooth and serve cold.
