Spinach in Smoothie
You might not think of spinach as a go-to ingredient for smoothies, but it works well! The leafy green is packed with nutrients like iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C, and it has a mild flavor that won't overwhelm other ingredients. Plus, spinach can help to give your smoothie a nice thick texture. If you're looking for a way to add some extra nutrition to your breakfast routine, try adding spinach to your next smoothie!
Ingredients
- Baby Spinach is always better for smoothies as it has a mild flavor. You can also use frozen spinach as it is easy to blend and create a frothy texture.
- Apple: I like to use gala and fuji apples to use in my smoothies as they are medium crisp and have a sweeter taste.
- Banana: frozen bananas are always great for making smoothies as you can skip the ice.
- Coconut water: I am using coconut water to thin the smoothie and for easy blending. You can use any juice like apple or orange or even plain water as per your choice.
How to Make the Apple Banana Spinach Smoothie
- Start with washing the spinach and apples. Make sure there are no dirt particles on leaves.
- Peel and cut the apples into cubes. Peeling apples is the key to achieving that perfect smoothie consistency. Just make sure you get all of those tasty bits, peel 'em'!
- Add in a banana for sweetness and creaminess.
- Throw in some ice cubes to make it cold and refreshing.
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Top with optional extras like coconut flakes, sunflower seeds, or some hemp seed to add some extra protein.
- Enjoy!
Serving and Storage Tips
Smoothies are always best consumed immediately after making them. This is because the nutrients in the smoothie are most potent when they are fresh. And, the longer you wait to drink your smoothie, the more these nutrients will deteriorate.
However, you can store this apple banana spinach smoothie for up to 48 hours in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.
Make sure to give your smoothie a good shake before drinking as separation will occur while storing.
Best Liquids to Use in Smoothies
I always love to use coconut water to thin my smoothies because of its low-calorie count and I think it gives the best taste and texture to my smoothies. But there are plenty of other plant-based options you can try to make your smoothies.
- Almond Milk
- Orange Juice
- Coconut Milk
- Coconut Yogurt
- Rice Milk
- Soy milk
- Apple Juice
- Oat Milk
- Water
Best Add-Ins for Smoothies
If you're looking for a quick and easy way to add some extra healthy ingredients, consider adding some add-ins to your smoothies. Not only do they provide a boost of nutrients, but they can also help to make your smoothies more filling and satisfying. Some of my favorite add ins are
- Plant Based Butters
- Plant based Protein Powder
- Nuts and Seeds
- Cocoa, maca, matcha, cinnamon, turmeric.
